Canada and Australasia the Government of
Canada has given provisionally , to what is
known as the "Hartington syndicate", an annual
subsidy for 10 years of £165,000. It is
thought that a further sum of £5000 may
possibly be obtained from the province of,
British Columbia.
To complete the subsidy estimated to be
necessary to secure the establishment of the
Company a further sum of £80,000 is required.
Of this amount it is hoped that the Imperial
Government will contribute £50,000, to be
made up as fllows:-
Armed Cruiser subvention for 7 ships
at 15/- per ton, per annum £33,000
Estimated saving upon present
San Francisco service by reduced rates 10,000
Surplus amount 7,000
leaving to be contributed by the Australian
Colonies the comparatively small sum of
£30,000 per annum.
