Constable and for a spell and with instructions to procure also a small punt from the Chinamen with their net and drag the Lagoon. Senior Const. Wavell discovered the body early the morning of the 12th in deep water. The deceased had evidently either bathing or following a wounded duck suddenly fallen into a deep hole, as the Lagoon where the body was found deepens very quickly in this place and as he could not swim and there were no weeds or Lily roots to catch hold of he must have been drowned. The distance from the barracks would be about 200 yds, but much lower than them. The deceased was brought into town on Monday afternoon the 12th Inst and the burial took place the following morning 8am. In conclusion I beg to state the Service has lost a most excellent, trustworthy officer I have the honor to be Sir Your most obedient Servant [signed] Alex. Douglas Insp
