McMillan's "Laura") River. Reached the main dividing Range in a distance of about 70 (seventy) miles on a general course of South West. I spent some days here in unsuccessful attempt to find a gap or favorable spur by which vehicles might pass over the Palmer River, but was at length compelled to bear away to the westward along the foot of the Range through level sandy country, crossing the track known as "Douglas", and so examining the Range all along, reached McMillans Track in about 40 (forty) miles at a point distant from this Township 45 (forty five) miles. Owing to the very unfavorable weather – which during the last 10 days was very wet – and consequent boggy state of the country along the foot of these Ranges, I found my horses were all rapidly failing, and I was reluctantly compelled to abandon the exploration of one large branch of the "Hann" River, by following which I am of the opinion a good crossing of the Range direct to this Township could be found, and a road made from here to Cooktown in 120 or under and I much regret my inability to spend more time or procure more horses for further exploration of this country.
