John Barry states on oath
I am a laborer and have
been for the last few weeks
in the employment of John
Pigott, alias "Yankey Jack".
I was working with a party
of men getting timber on Frazers
Island. the party were at
work on a Crest to the South
-west of the White Cliffs near
Stewarts Island, on last Sunday
week the 27th ult. John
Pigott and I started in a boat
intending to come to Maryboro.
we landed at the south
head of the River that night
started next morning
for Maryboro – but mistook
the way, and instead of
coming up the River got
blown away to the north
end of Frazers Island – where
we landed about sundown
on Wednesday the 30th when
we beached the boat four
Blackfellows assisted us to
haul up the boat – I then
proceeded to make a fire; but
changed my mind, and asked
a Blackfellow to make a
fire for me which he did.
Pigott then went with four
Blacks to secure the Boat
and about two minutes after

immediately after this two
blacks came up to me, one
of whom stood in front of
me, and another at my
side, during this time a
black who had not gone
with Pigott remained with
me. immediately after this a
black who stood in front
made a blow with a club
at my head – I raised my Arm
on which the blow fell. I then ran
into the surf, where I was followed
by two blacks, but they
did not go so far into the
water as I did. I then came
on to the beach again, when
a blackfellow struck me with
the barrel of a gun – on the hand,
and with the blow separated
the sinews between my fingers
I retreated again into the surf
but on coming ashore again I
recd another blow with the gun
barrel on my forehead which
Knocked me down into the
water, the blacks then left
me, and in about one minute
after I got up and got into
a thick tea tree scrub where
