Copp. [Longreach] District [Blackall Station] 13th Feb. 1924. 76/24. Re Aborigianl names in [Blackall] Bloakll Police District vide Memo from Under Home Secretary dated 5/12/23. Sir, I beg to report that there are very few places in this District bearing aboriginal names and most of those are renamed after places in Victoria or New South Wales from which the original selectors came from. Cootabynia is the name of a selection adjoining [Listowell Downs]. The correct word should be Coothabynia. The meaning of the word is the name of a coloured clay that the [Listowel Valley] blacks used to plaint their bodies with for Corroborres and Bora. On this selection there is a hill containing this clay. The name was thus given to the selection by the original selector who was book-keeper on [Listowel Downs]. Moonbong is the name of a selection on the [Blackall] side of the [Warrego Ranges] about 30 miles from [Blackall], and the Ranges running through the selection are known as the Moonbong Ranges. The correct aboriginal word is Moombung. The name was not doubt derived from the aboriginal name Moombung given to a Rockhole in the Range which contained a supply of water. [left margin} X Those are the only two names of places in this District that have been named after localy aboriginal words. The name of the tribe occupying the country round [Blackall] were known as "Koongarri". The tribe on the country in the direction of [Isisford] were known as "Goowan", a nd the tribe at [Listowel] were known as "Boodgahdee". X. Water was called"Goomuh". [H. Gay] Sergt. [P. Duffy] SubInsp.Duffy, [Longreach].
