(6) Queensland place names and their meanings. Two other place names which may be of interest. Caboolture. Is derived from Kabooltya,meaning place of carpet snakes,from kabool,carpet snake and tya, country or place. According to a map published in 1847 this name was first applied to the inner end of what is now Deception Bay. Later on its[sic] seems to have been applied to the river then known as Cuthbertson's Creek from which again the township and railway station have taken their names. The name is of Yagarabul origin. Maleny. A township and parish situated to the west of the Blackall Range. This name is mentioned on account of the diversity of opinion on the matter. The name was derived from the name of a member of the survey party under the District surveyor. Adjoining parishes are named from two other members of the staff. Some notes on spelling of aboriginal words etc. (1) Letters P and B are used optionally. (2) In the South of the Kabi territory L is sometimes inserted before D. (3) The letter K is sometimes elided when it occurs between vowels. (4) G and K (or Kg) are optional. (5) T,D,Dh and sometimes Ch are used optionally. (6) Tom Petrie's "Reminiscenses of early Queensland". Except where otherwise mentioned these names are of Kabi origin. [FJWatson] P.S.
