Everything will depend upon the com-
petency of the Overseer or Trade Instructor
apponted and he must not only be an
expert Cutter - but have tact and
decision in managing the prisoners under
his charge - I have lately had an
interview with the Colonel Commandant
of the Defence Force, relative to this
matter, and he informs one that the
Master Tailor of the Defence Force would
be willing to accept the position about to
be vacated by Mr Davies, if appropriate thereto -
Presonally, I know nothing of the Master
Tailor, or if in all respects he would be
suitable for the position at St Helena -
As Master Tailor in the Defence Force
he will doubtless have much experience in
the making of military uniforms, and he
may probably be quite competent to
superintend and instruct the prisoners
under his charge in the manufacture of
the other articles of clothing which have
to be made in the prison -
I understand that Mr. Howard
is married and has a family, and would
expect to be provided with a cottage on the
Island - but as there are none vacant, his
wishes could not at present be indulged
in
