The Under Colonial Secretary
Sir,
I have the honor to reply
to your letter of the 22nd. instant,
I much regret that an increase
of salary cannot be given at present, but
hope that at the time named by you,
(vis. twelve months, (if not before) I shall be
deemed worthy of the increase desired,
I shall leave my present Employer's
Service on the 31st. instant, and should
I be so favoured as to receive the appoint-
-ment I shall be at liberty to proseed [sic.] to
St Helena after that date,
