Colonial Secretary's Office.
Brisbane.
14th January 1863.
63/33
Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your
letter, dated the 29th ultimo, nominating for a Cadet Ship
in the Native Mounted Police Force, Mr. B. S. Owen
and recommending that he should receive pay from the
22nd ultimo, since which date he had been on duty.
In reply I am to inform you that your letter has
been under consideration by His Excellency the Governor
and the Executive Council, who are under an impression
from the number of appointments recently made that the
authorized Staff of Cadets must be exceeded.
Before conferring the appointment of Mr Davis
the Government therefore desire that you will have the
goodness to furnish a return to be sent in henceforth
monthly to the Honorable The Colonial Secretary, showing
all the officers of the Force and their Stations respectively,
also showing the number of Troopers under the Command
of each Officer, and the duty performed during the past
month, together with such other information as may
enable the Government at any time to ascertain the
strength and efficiency of the Corps.
I have, &c
(Signed) A.W. Manning,
P.M. Secretary
The Commandant
