THIS ITEM IS TOP-NUMBERED TO 6927/1895 Benches Copy Colonial Secretary Office Brisbane 9th October 1889 89/3958 Sir, I have the honor by direction to forward to you the accompanying letter from the Police Magistrate, Herberton, dated the 27th ultimo, together with other corespondence, on the subject of the condition of the Aboriginals of the Herberton District, their relations with the white settlers, and the temporary measures which have been taken to Conciliate them and provide for their maintainance After perusing Mr Zillman's letter, and that of Mr. Robinson (29th August) the Colonial Secretary has come to the conclusion that the time has now arrived when the whole matter must be dealt with in a more comprehensive manner than hitherto, and he has accordingly directed me to request that you will be good enough to proceed north at your earliest convenience for the purpose of visiting the localities named in the correspondence, and reporting upon the judiciousness, or otherwise, of adopting the system of treatment suggested by Mr. Zillman in his latest communication, or any other mode of dealing with the blacks which the results of your own observations and of your inquiries may lead you to recommend.
