FEB. 91 [right of page] [in red ink] PM [underlined in red] Cooktown 24th January 1891 [left of page, in pencil] 3 - 91 [in red ink] Further in re case against four aboriginals for murder of J Robinson Sir, I have the honor to report having discharged the four aborigin- al boys charged with the murder of James Robinson of the beche-de-mer Cutter "Ruby", for want of sufficient evidence; they have since shipped in the "Spey", another fishing vessel. It appears these boys were not on the articles of the "Ruby", and were probably kidnapped on the coast. The two gins were originally kidnapped, but were shipped here in the "Ruby" on 15th October last. The practice of shipping native women in these fishing craft is a fruitful cause of serious trouble, and I have no doubt in the case of Robinson led to his being killed. I am wiring for permission to return the two gins to their home on the Mulgrave river. I have the honor to be Sir, your most obedient servant [signed] HM Chester P.M.
