Honb. Colonial Secretary
Brisbane
Sir
I have the honor to inform you,
that I am at present residing on a
selection, near the Musgrave River
Cairns District, on the direct road
to the Russell River.
On the 2nd Inst, a Mr. Gallaghy, called
on me & stated that a man, was missing
from a Selection about nine miles
from here, near the Russell River.
He stated, that not knowing the man
about, and the hut door open, they
went in & found the place empty,
Blankets, Rations, Guns, and tools
gone, Everything except the man's
watch, which was left on a nail, in
the hut. After searching all Around
the place, they came to the conclusion
that the man was killed by the Blacks,
that was allowed, about the Camp.
Mr. Gallaghy went on as far as Mr. Davis
J.P. and gave informations to him that
night, Mr. Davis, informed the Police
in Cairns. The next morning, Sunday,
after eight days, the Blackfellows,
made their appearance, and camped here
for the night. Then 5. 30 P.M. they were
on the road again by 8 a.m. next Day, the
12th. Inst. Up to the present times they
have not returned. It appears that
the Officer in Charge of the District
was not at the quarters was the delay.
Sir, there is a large extent of country
& scrub, between Cairns and the Johnstone
River, that has a large numbers of Selectors
scatered [sic] over it; some of them a large
distance apart. Most of the camps
have only two or three men at the
camps, which makes them very weak
